Clock Tower
Torre dell'Orologio, Via Castel Lemmi, Montecatini Alto, PT, Italia
Castle
Description
On the top of the ancient fortified hill where the mighty castle of Montecatini stood, there is the village of Montecatini Alto, 299 meters above sea level, reachable from the lower part of the town, as well as by road, also by a charming funicular. Of the great castle, completely razed to the ground in the 16th century, some medieval gates and few towers remain. In their splendor, they were two kilometers long.
The only remaining piece of the ancient fortification is the Tower "de' Lemmi", also known as the "Clock Tower" because it houses a sixteenth-century clock at its top, now connected to an eighteenth-century dial at six o'clock on the outer wall. Of the seven access gates, only the Porta di Borgo is still standing, and some of the 25 noble towers remain incorporated into other buildings.
