Description
Built on the site of the ancient Scuderie Granducali (the Grand Duke’s Stables), which completed the complex of the nearby Palazzina Regia and were granted free of charge to the Municipality by the Government with the Law of 13 July 1911, the Town Hall of Montecatini Terme is a monumental building inspired by Renaissance palaces.
Bagni di Montecatini
In the early years of the twentieth century, Bagni di Montecatini, the ancient name of the city that became an autonomous municipality in 1905, was experiencing great excitement: the Thermae, a fashionable meeting place, attracted personalities from all over the world and the city grew and enriched itself with elegant buildings.
1911: decision to build
Thus, in 1911, the City Council, certain of the "brilliant future" of the town, decided to build a new Town Hall that was suitable for the size and role that the spa center was assuming.
1912: planning
In 1912, architect Raffaello Brizzi was commissioned to design the building, and he was accompanied as collaborator and works manager by the municipal engineer Luigi Righetti. The executive project, for a total estimated cost of 324,868.82 Lire, was approved by the City Council on April 30, 1913.
1913: start of construction
The works began in 1913, difficult years for Italy as it prepared to enter the First World War. The war and the desire to create a functional building for administrative purposes - which would house all municipal, postal, telegraphic, and telephone offices as well as those of the Public Security delegation - but at the same time, elegant and rich in details, account for the long construction times of the building, which was completed in 1919 and inaugurated on September 26, 1920.
1924: inauguration
The official inauguration, however, took place in 1924, in the presence of the Duke of Udine, delegate of King Vittorio Emanuele III to attend the event.
Decorations of the Town Hall
For the internal decorations of the building, Luigi Arcangioli and Galileo Chini were chosen. The former is responsible for the decoration of the ceiling of the Council Chamber, while the latter is responsible for the production of skylights, stained glass windows, and frescos around the splendid central velarium.
