Description
An original way to reach the upper village is definitely by the historic funicular railway, inaugurated in 1898 and consisting of two carriages, Gigio and Gigia, which meet halfway throught the route
The idea of building a cable system between Montecatini Alto and Montecatini Terme, then respectively called "Castello" and "Bagni di Montecatini", was proposed at the end of the 19th century by the Genoese engineer Alessandro Ferretti and financed by Ing. Carlo Barbano and Cav. Giacomo Giovannetti, to whom the square above the upper station of the funicular is dedicated.
History
The inauguration took place on June 4 1898 in the presence of distinguished guests including Giuseppe Verdi. In the first years of operation, the two red trains were powered by the large steam boiler located at the upper station, until 1921, when the traction method was entrusted to a powerful electric motor. The funicular service has experienced some interruptions over time: on September 2, 1944, a war episode caused extensive destruction and made it unusable until 1949; in 1977, due to the need for technical adaptation work, the Funicular Railway was closed and reopened on August 3, 1982, thanks to the contribution of the Tuscany Region, which also allowed the restoration of the carriages that maintain the same structure consisting of three compartments with wooden benches and two external balconies.

It is possible to buy the ticket only at the time of boarding, at the ticket offices of the funicular stations. You can pay by cash, credit card or debit card.
